Make way for the future, for it will be centered around the stars, along with a few asteroids and maybe some planets, who knows. Planetary Resources, a new start-up company, is on the verge of accomplishing things we've only seen in movies, things that are considered difficult but not exactly impossible to pull off. Well, at least once the right amount of funding and equipments are in place to make it work.
Planetary Resources Inc. is backed by high profile names such as Google Chief Executive Larry Page, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, director James Cameron and Ross Perot Jr. The aim of the company is to do mining on asteroids and other planets. Such a feat will not be easy to accomplish, but when it happens, humans will no longer have to rely on Earth and that is a hell of a good thing if you ask us.
Eric Anderson, the founder of space tourism company Space Adventures, and Peter Diamandis, the man behind the X Prize foundation, are the men who started this venture, which hopes to bring the human race into a new era of space exploration.
To pull off something of this magnitude, Planetary Resources Inc will require the right kind of genius, crazy along with a huge bankroll, and from what we have seen, it already has all of the above. This is a huge risk for all who are involved, but risk or not, it is clear that we as humans cannot rely on the earth resources, and must find other means of getting what we need and the only place that is overflowing with minerals is outer space.
The company is expected to hold more talks about it plans, such plans includes launching a satellite to seek out the best possible candidates for mining. This kind of remind us of Mass Effect 2, where you have to scan a planet to find the best place to mine. Only this is not a video game.
Other partners include former NASA Mars mission manager Chris Lewicki and planetary scientist and veteran NASA astronaut Tom Jones.
