Fox has yet to renew the third season of the post-apocalyptic series "Wayward Pines." In case "Wayward Pines" season 3 will happen, reports claimed that it could be the show's final season.

Reports about the season 3 being the last season of "Wayward Pines" began when the show's executive producer, M. Night Shaylaman, previously confirmed that the post-apocalyptic series is due for only three seasons.

"I think we can say it's a three-season story," Slash Film quoted Shaylaman as saying. "If we get the opportunity to tell the third and final season, we can finish the story."

Some reports believed "Wayward Pines" season 3 is unlikely to happen, seeing how Fox has not given an official renewal order for the series. According to News Briefs, the renewal odds for the show is entirely low given the second season's performance in viewership ratings.

The first season of "Wayward Pines" started strong with 3.06 million viewers and 2.3 ratings. The second season, on the other hand, only received an average of 2.4 million viewers and a 0.7 demo rating.

Despite struggling with its ratings last season, "Wayward Pines" remained the number one scripted show of the Summer, as revealed by Fox Television CEO Dana Walden during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Walden added that the network is waiting for a complete picture before ruling on the series' fate. "We don't know yet what we're going to find when the multi-platform numbers roll up, ultimately how big that audience [can be]," TV Line quoted Walden as saying.
