The football community was recently rocked with the latest rankings for Electronic Arts' "FIFA 17," as Cristiano Ronaldo sweeps the top spot away from arch nemesis Lionel Messi, after a seven-year reign.
The Real Madrid football star, garnering an overall score of 94, is hailed the best rated football player in "FIFA 17," with Messi slipping down to the number two spot, getting only a rating of 93 . This puts Ronaldo ahead of the Barcelona forward for the first time in seven years, as illustrated in a chart by Sport English.
This has led to a huge debate over whether Ronaldo deserved the top spot, or if Messi should retain his crown.
A huge factor favoring CR7's win against Messi can be attributed to his triumphs during the Champions League and Euro 2016, according to Barca Blaugranes.
On the other hand, according to the site, the Barcelona star may have been snubbed off the top spot due to him not having an affiliation with Electronic Arts anymore. Messi signed a four-year contract with EA in 2012, and that has now expired.
Furthermore, according to 101 Great Goals, FC Barcelona signed a sponsorship deal with Konami, the developers of the FIFA games' ultimate competitor, "Pro Evolution Soccer". This could be one of the reasons why Messi's stats were downgraded this year.
Now enraged fans are questioning EA's "FIFA 17" rankings, taking to Twitter to air their concerns.
One fan on Twitter asked EA why they rated West Ham player Dimitri Payet's pass higher than Messi's.
Even retired footballer and now sports broadcaster Gary Lineker can't help but put in his opinion on the matter, telling fans to not take the scores at face value.
"It's a game. It's not real," Lineker said on Twitter, "Messi is the best passer ever. They are taking the piss! Don't take it to heart."
In another Twitter post, Lineker said, "Messi is so good, he even scores after he retires."
"FIFA 17" will be kicking off on September 27 for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
