Disney has recently announced the shutdown of the popular game based on the Marvel universe, "Marvel: Avengers Alliance."

"Today we are announcing the shutdown of 'Marvel: Avengers Alliance' and 'Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2' on all platforms, including the App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Windows Phone Store, and Facebook," Disney said on a statement on its website.

"Beginning today, we are no longer accepting new purchases or downloads, but the games will be available to play until September 30, 2016." The company added.

The free-to-play game, which was launched on Facecbook in March 2012, has millions of players across the globe, most of which are hardcore Marvel fans.

The game is one of the most popular Facebook games ever, with frequent content being dropped from time to time, mostly through Marvel movie tie-ups like "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Avengers," keeping the fanbase happy. The game has expanded to iOS and Android a year later.

Now fans are shocked to find out that the game will be shutting down permanently at the end of this month, especially since Marvel just launched Spec Ops 36.

Disney said that the reason for the closure is for the company to shift their development focus towards other Disney Mobile apps, according to Kotaku.

The shock announcement has disappointed a huge number of "Marvel: Avengers Alliance" fans, especially those who have been playing the game for years. Some players have even spent tons of dollars on the game, only for it to close down on them.

In a comment that probably echoes the sentiments of fellow players around the world, a disgruntled fan said, "So you're shutting it down to focus on other games why would any of us play any new games you release knowing what you did with this one?"

According to Product Reviews, however, the closure came as no surprise, and could tell that the franchise is heading towards this inevitable path, which started going downhill when Playdom shut down "Marvel: Avengers Alliance Tactics."

"Marvel" Avengers Alliance" Spec Ops 36: Truth of Infinity, featuring unlockable hero Adam Warlock, started on Sept. 1, and will run all throughout the month, before permanently ending the game on Sept. 30.
