A big reason behind criticism against Android phones is that respective manufacturer are too busy in launching new phones that they hardly find any time to update its existing phones to next-generation Android OS versions. In case of Windows Phones, it is being expected that all the current WP devices will get update to WP8 Apollo, the upcoming version of second-generation windows mobile platform. But Windows phones may also end up with a similar fate as Android devices.

According to the latest reports, some or maybe all of Windows phones could go missing from the WP Apollo update list. Different contradicting stories are hitting the Internet with notions of their own.

Nuno Silva - a Developer Evangelist for Microsoft quotes that all the current WP7.5 devices will get Windows Phone 8 update. But folks at Verge are arguing over the matter, claiming that none of the existing Windows Phone will get the taste of Windows Phone 8 OS codenamed Apollo.

At the moment, we do not know about the hardware specifications required to run Windows Phone 8. The current Windows Phones pack single-core 1.4 GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, due to strict system requirements for running Windows Phones OS 7.5 (Mango/Tango). If the next-generation Widows Phone OS demands better requirements, say a dual-core processor, than the current Windows phones will never get any future OS update, including Windows Phone 8.

Microsoft has not yet spoken anything on this matter. The software giant has not announced that the Apollo update will hit existing Windows Phone devices. Nor is it saying that the Windows Phone Mango devices will not be getting the new OS update at all as such a statement will harm sales of current Windows Phones in the market. So, all the Windows Phone device owners can do is keep their fingers crossed to hear good news from the Windows maker.

If it turns out to be true that the existing Windows Phone devices will not get Apollo update at all, then it will be a bad news for every proud Windows Phone owner. Speculations were high before the release of Nokia Lumia 900 that Apollo update is something confirmed for this smartphone. But, Lumia 900 is no different than other Windows phones, when it comes to processor chipset.
