You can activate a new AirTag battery that will last for one year from the date it's activated. More specifically, though, the number of replacement cycles will depend on your purchases of batteries along with the general usage patterns that you may set for your AirTag.

AirTag Batteries Are Not Rechargeable

Owning an AirTag is not the same as owning an iPhone, according to Wired. If it runs out of power, you have no means to recharge its battery. You need to replace its battery immediately.

What Type of Battery Do You Need?

Well, the good news is that you do not have to go out to the tune of hundreds of bucks to purchase special batteries from Apple. AirTags use the standard CR2032 lithium coin battery, which is 3-volt in battery size and commonly found in a wristwatch or even other small electronics.

You can easily find them, even inside stores or online. A pack of four typically costs around $6.

However, take note that some of the CR2032 have bitter coatings to discourage children from ingesting them. None of those coated are AirTags compatible, so you'll need to identify the packaging for verification.

If the battery is compliant, it will have boldly stated "Compatible With Apple AirTag" on the package.

How to Replace the AirTag Battery

Now that you've got a replacement battery, this is how you simply and very easily change the old battery:

  1. Flip the AirTag: Ensure that the side with the silver facing you, and it should have the Apple logo.
  2. Twist Off the Cover: Place your fingertips down and twist that silver piece a quarter to the counterclockwise till it comes loose.
  3. Remove the Battery: Pop out the old battery from the slot once the cover is removed.
  4. Insert the New Battery: Insert the new CR2032 battery into an empty slot with its ' '+' sign up toward you.
  5. Lodge the Cover: Place the silver cover back and press it firmly, and then click and lock the cover clockwise.

The AirTag is now active and ready for tracking once again.

Dispose of the Old Battery

Do not throw out the battery after you replace it in your i-device. The batteries your i- i-devices use are filled with toxic materials that will need to have a more responsible disposal. You can recycle your battery through the Apple recycling program or bring it to an e-waste service in your area.

Alternatives to AirTag: Want a Rechargeable Tracker?

If you're sick and tired of having to exchange batteries and want a rechargeable tracking device, you could consider the Pebblebee.

Unlike AirTag, the Pebblebee is charged via USB-C and does not require users to replace batteries. This makes it an excellent choice for those in search of ease, particularly if it means attaching the device to keys or pets.

All it takes is a few minutes to exchange the battery in your AirTag. With the right care for the type of battery, you could maintain your AirTag and ensure that valuables continue being tracked.

Sticking with an AirTag or choosing a rechargeable one, like Pebblebee, is what keeps tracking devices powered up and keeps you connected.
