Both the Canon 70D and 80D are extremely capable cameras. However, the 80D is newer than the 70D, which was announced more than three years ago. Does it mean it would be better for you?

Here are some of the differences between the two cameras and perhaps, they should help aspiring professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Still Images

In this department, the Canon 80D gets a slight advantage over the 70D. Having a 24-megapixel sensor that is four more megepixels than the 70D's 20. It captures roughly 20 percent more detail than the older 70D, but that is not to say that the older camera lacks the punch, as evident in this image.

The 70D handles noise pretty well and provides usable images up until ISO 800. However, the 80D gets the advantage with a better image noise handling even at ISO 1600. This is all thanks to its slightly better sensor.

Video

This is a function where both of these cameras shine brightly. Both of them have flip out screens, touch screen function, and are pretty inexpensive compared to higher-tiered DSLRs.

The only main difference between the two is the framerate. The 80D supports full HD of 1080p at 60 frames per second. This is very ideal for slow motion shots or for those who plan to slow down their footages later.

The 70D, on the other hand, only has 30 frames per second for 1080p videos. It does have 60 frames per second, but only for 720p. This may be something to considered, especially for those who would like to produce the highest possible resolutions with smooth 60 frames per second footages.

Both camera produces very usable and high-quality videos nonetheless.

Other Functions and Features

While the 70D and 80D have some definitive differences with video and still image capabilities, almost all the features are carried over to the 80D. They both almost the same size, the same LCD screen of 7.6cm of 1,040k dots. Both have Pentaprism viewfinders and even the same burst shooting speed of 7 frames per second.

One big difference in function between the two is the focus point. The 80D has 45 while the 70D has 19 only. This could be very useful in a lot of situations where auto focus point need is warranted.

Price

This is where it all boils down. Canon 80D's price on Amazon with just the body only starts at $1,199 while the 70D starts at $900. If the bigger resolution, slightly better low-light performance, faster framerates on video and more focus points are worth the extra $200, then 80D is the way to go.

This isn't to say that the 70D isn't a performer, and given the price it is right now, it is still a good buy, especially if you're not ready to go full pro yet.
