The release date for survival horror game "Outlast 2" has been pushed back to 2017.

The much awaited sequel to "Outlast" was originally scheduled for a Fall 2016 release. However, indie game studio Red Barrels posted an update on the official Facebook page to announce that the game will no longer be coming out this year.

"We had to make a difficult decision recently," Red Barrels wrote on the social media page. "After weighing our options we've decided to postpone 'Outlast 2''s release until Q1 of 2017."

The team explained that they want to absolutely make sure that "Outlast 2" is a worthwhile experience for excited fans, and would need more time to make this happen.

"We want you to know that we listen to your feedback, we see your excitement and we know you care about our work," the team continued. "Our mission as an indie studio is to deliver to you the best, most terrifying, most fulfilling experiences possible."

Red Barrels also confirmed that there will be no VR compatibility to be added to "Outlast 2" at the moment, Playstation Lifestyle reported.

The indie studio also said on the comments that the sequel will be 20 - 30 percent longer than the first title, and is also looking at a possibility of releasing physical copies of the game for the PC in the future.

"Outlast 2" will be following the story of cameraman and investigative journalist Blake Langermann. Together with his wife, Lynn, the two try to dig deep into the mystery of the recent murder of pregnant woman known only as Jane Doe.

The first "Outlast" game received a number of accolades from critics, and was hailed as one of the scariest games ever made. Red Barrels has promised that the sequel will be a much scarier experience than the first "Outlast" title.

"Outlast 2" will be released on Playstation 4, Steam, and Xbox One.
