"Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" is due to be released next month. Before that, let's take a quick look at what we know about Eidos Montreal and Square Enix's cyberpunk action role-playing game so far.

The Story

"Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" takes place two years after "Deus Ex: Human Revolution," in the year 2029.

After the tragedy "Aug Incident," in which mechanically augmented humans started to become violent, the world is thrown into an era of "Mechanical Apartheid," spreading tension between augmented humans, called augs, and non-augmented ones.

Protagonist Adam Jensen, who is an aug himself, finds out that the terrorist group Illuminati is the one who is responsible for the attacks, controlling the augs to do its bidding. Jensen sets off to confront the Illuminati, with the help of the Juggernaut collective, to stop them from causing more destruction.

Gameplay Changes

Polygon reported last year that it is possible to complete "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" without killing anyone. And yes, that includes the bosses in the game.

For those who are familiar with the bosses in "Deus Ex: Human Revolution," this could be an unbelievable statement. However, for "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided," game designer Antoine Thisdale confirmed that this is possible.

Thisdale said that many of the augmentations in "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" will give the players the freedom to choose their own way of dealing with enemies, a departure from the lethal approach of "Human Revolution."

As for bosses, it is possible to take them down without killing them. "Mankind Divided" will be offering augmentations that have unique ammo types which are effective against certain enemies.

Additional Mode: Breach

Another addition to the game is the new arcade-like mode called "Breach." The new mode is a first-person minigame that allows Jensen to hack through security nodes via VR to gain information, according to Endgadget.

The mode contains approximately 75 puzzle levels. Players must retrieve date within a set time limit, which is potentially a hit for speedrun attempts in the future.

Release Date and Platforms

"Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" will be released for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 23.
