"Crash Bandicoot" is set to make its comeback soon. Sony announced the "Crash Bandicoot Trilogy Remastered" bundle for the PS4 at E3 2016. But will he be back for good?
"Crash Bandicoot" fans have been asking for a new Crash game for a long time now. The game's last title, racing mobile game "Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2," was released in 2010, and fans have not heard from Crash since.
The remastered bundle will include the first three games in the series, "Crash Bandicoot," "Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back" and "Crash Bandicoot: Warped."
It was not, however, the original "Crash Bandicoot" the fans are hoping for, according to Entertainment CheatSheet. Activision has tried reviving the "Crash" franchise since "Nitro Kart 2" with a fresh new title, but the game publisher has faced several project cancellations.
Activision has started a "Crash" reboot in 2010, with tentative titles "Crash Landed" and "I Am Crash Bandicoot." The project's developer Radical Entertainment has suffered layoffs in February 2010, IGN reported. Eventually, the project was abandoned in favor of action-adventure video game "Prototype 2."
Another recent attempt at a "Crash Bandicoot" title was scrapped in 2014. The Playstation 4 "Crash Bandicoot" title, which was supposed to be developed by Cerny Games, was not finished before the "Crash" series remained under Activision in 2013.
The concept was used for "Knack" instead, which was described at the time as the "Crash Bandicoot for the PS4."
The "Crash" remaster is now being handled by Vicarious Studios, who has developed the previous "Crash Bandicoot" Game Boy Advance versions and is one of the oldest studios of Activision, Push Square reported.
Vicarious has also worked on the "Skylanders" games, and was the both the support and lead studio of the recent "Skylanders: Superchargers." Vicarious will also be bringing Crash as a playable character in the latest "Skylander" title, "Skylanders Imaginators."
According to Kotaku, the remastered versions and Crash's appearance in "Skylanders" is a good sign of things to come, and could possibly be the beginning of Crash's revival.
It could just be a remaster for now, but fans might be able to convince Activision to give the players a brand new "Crash Bandicoot" title in the near future.
"Crash Bandicoot Trilogy Remastered" will be crashing its way to the Playstation 4 next year.
