Game producer Hideo Kojima shocked the crowd during his surprise appearance at Sony's E3 presentation with a trailer for his studio's new game "Death Stranding."
The trailer video stunned the audience more than Kojima's appearance itself. The game director loves hyping the fans up, Polygon reported, and he did just that. Fans are now trying to decipher the meaning of the trailer and what the game is actually about.
Let's take a look at some of the theories fans have cooked up from the trailer.
The title "Death Stranding" can be compared to the phenomenon "Cetacean Stranding" in which cetaceans, or whales, strand themselves on land, particularly on the beach. These strandings are caused by multiple reasons, but the effect is always the same. These whales end up dying on the shore.
Kotaku connects that "Death Stranding," in which actor Norman Reedus is trapped on a beach, may suggest that he is already dead. This coincides with Kojima saying that "Death Stranding" is for something that is not alive.
Eagle-eyed Redditor tuomas146 also pointed out the dog tags on Reedus' character, which shows the Schwarzchild Radius and the Dirac Equation, which references quantum mechanics and relativity. The game might possibly have a sci-fi theme to it, as the equations suggest.
NeoGaf forumer Vaga also speculates that Reedus' character must have ended up there by travelling through a black hole. "An example of an object where the mass is within its Schwarzschild radius is a black hole," the forumer said.
Twitter was also caught up with tons of conspiracy theories about Reedus' character and the baby attached to him via umbilical cord.
Some users speculated that the baby is a clone of the main character, while others think that it is actually Reedus' baby which was ripped out from his body, hence the cross-shaped scar on his stomach.
The "Metal Gear Solid" creator seems to be relishing the buzz that his "Death Stranding" trailer started. The game producer told Polygon in an interview that he intentionally hides hints and referenced in pre-release media for the fans to discover and discuss.
"I believe that the game medium is something that allows this to happen," Kojima said. "These gimmicks are intentional and I enjoy this."
In a separate interview with IGN, Kojima confirmed that "Death Stranding" will be an action game that will appeal to fans of AAA action titles like "Uncharted" and "The Division," but will be a completely different experience at the same time.
"People that play [action] games will be able to pick it up easily," Kojima tells IGN. "After that, like 2-3 hours into the game, they will start feeling like, 'okay, this is something different, this is something new.'"
IGN also tried to dissect the trailer in the video below.
