Game publisher giants Sony and Microsoft seem to continue competing against each other in the console arena, with each company bringing out their own console champions. Which one will ultimately win?
Tech gaming news site Digital Foundry has posted a comparison chart, pitting the Xbox One "Project Scorpio," which was announced at Microsoft's E3 Press Conference, and the PS4 Neo, which was a no-show at E3 but was announced earlier by Sony.
Scorpio gets a point above the Neo, boasting six teraflops of processing power, compared to Neo's 4.2, making it 40 percent faster.
Sony's Neo will be utilising the AMD Polaris 10, and will use 36 improved GCN compute units at 911MHz.
DF speculates that Scorpio, on the other hand, will not use Polaris, and might use the upcoming Vega technology instead. According to a leak from an AMD engineer on LinkedIn, Vega will feature 64 compute units. Even if it's cut down to 56 compute units, it would still be above the Neo's announced specs.
PS Neo has a memory of 8GB GDDR5 at 218GB/s, while Scorpio is announced to have over 320 GB/s of bandwidth, with a rumored specs of 12GB GDDR5.
Though the existence of the PS Neo is already confirmed, a release date is not given yet for the new console. Microsoft, on the other hand, hopes to release the Scorpio during the holidays next year. It could be that Sony is just waiting for Microsoft to give out a release date so the Neo can be released earlier, possibly giving them a slight advantage over the other.
Both consoles have also declared that they will be doing away with the dreaded console "generation", Tech Times reports. Instead of releasing new consoles that are meant to replace the old model, just like what usually happens, they released an upgraded version of the existing ones.
Sony and Microsoft both announced that their new consoles will support the previous launch models. Sony said that Neo is intended to "sit alongside and compliment the standard PS4".
Meanwhile, Microsoft declared that all Xbox accessories will work with Project Scorpio and said that "no one gets left behind."
Comparing the two consoles as early as now might feel a bit premature since they are not even out yet. Don't forget, Nintendo has the NX up its sleeves as well, and the life of the consoles ultimately depends on the quality titles the developers will bring to the table.
So who is the real winner? It's not Sony, Nintendo, nor Microsoft. These companies bring out and improve these new consoles to deliver the best products and the best services for the real winners: the millions of gamers around the world.
