Game developer Maxis has expanded its gender customization options for popular life simulation game "The Sims 4".
The latest update for "The Sims 4" has made a huge change to the game's "Create A Sim" mode, removing all gender boundaries from the game, PC Gamer reports. This means that Sims can be made with any type of physique, tone of voice, and style of walk, regardless if the character is initially male or female.
The Sims can also change their gender anytime, and over 700 in-game content that was previously unavailable to either male or female Sims can now be used by all Sims, without restricting them to one gender. All the expansions will be affected by the change.
This means that the Sim can be dressed up in any way the players preferred. Male characters can wear skirt, makeup and heels, while females can sport a tuxedo and and a cropped hairdo.
"The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it's really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games." Maxis wrote on the Sims Blog. "We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more."
Maxis and Electronic Arts has been looking into this project for over a year, "The Sims 4" executive producer Rachel Frankin confirmed in an email to the Associated Press. The developer has also coordinated with LGBT advocate GLAAD on the update.
"Creating the possibility for greater gender diversity within the world of 'The Sims' is an exciting development," said Nick Adams, director of GLAAD's transgender media program. "It was a pleasure working with developers who were committed to updating the game so that all players can create a Sims world that more accurately reflects the world in which we live today."
"The Sims 4" update patch is available now.
