With the launch of the new iPad, Apple also released its newest software update, the iOS 5.1. The new tablets will not be available for purchase until later this week. However owners of other Apple devices can download and install the iOS 5.1 update now.

The upgraded operating system comes with a new home screen and a Lock Screen Camera Slider, allowing users to take a photo from the lock screen. No pass-codes are required, making instantaneous photo capturing easier than ever.

The beloved voice assistant, Siri, now speaks six languages, as the iOS 5.1 has added Japanese to its abilities. The languages now supported by the software are English (U.S., UK and Australian), German, French, and Japanese.

One of the most important upgrades to the operating system is designed to address the battery life issues experienced with the iPhone 4S. Apple has eliminated a number of bugs that caused serious battery issues for some users.

Apple also improved face recognition in the camera app, as well as the camera app interface. Now it can recognize multiple faces at once, which comes in handy for group photos. In addition, now users can delete photos from within iCloud’s Photo Stream, not just from the device.

Music and audio have been improved with Genius mixes and playlists for iTunes Match subscribers, making it easier to find new music, movies or TV shows. The software has been designed to suggest new content based on previous preferences. Moreover, a filter applied to the audio output of iPads playing movies or TV shows will make the sound louder and clearer when played through the iPad’s internal speaker.

The upgraded iOS 5.1 is available for download from iTunes. Apple’s official Web site offers the complete list of upgrades, as well as directions on how to install the desired update.
