Year 2016 they say is the year for virtual reality, and it seems that Google has taken that special note into its heart by thoroughly preparing for it. Previously, the tech giant has been seen to be far off the backs of its competitors Microsoft and Facebook in the area of VR, but this year it seems that it is now moving fast to catch up.

Preparations in the past for virtual reality included the search engine to put its focus on products for VR and how to improve it. However, its progress has been relatively low. Now, though, it seems that it is catching up and have moved a step forward by having one key person added into its roster of employees, or rather by creating a position that will handle all VR concerns.

The new position is that of a VR boss, and it fell into the lap of one of the tech giant's executive, Clay Bavor. The Google official has been the VP for product management for the tech company and has run the search engine's apps like Docs, Drive and Gmail. He has been seen as one of the main guys overseeing the Google Cardboard.

Due to the new position given to him, Bavor will now drop the responsibility he has on apps and shift most of his focus and attention to more virtual reality products. The app division that Bavor is dropping will now fall into the shoulders of incoming Google SVP Diane Greene.

The Cardboard was the tech giant's VR device launched in 2014. It was designed to be a mainstream intro to VR. For quite some time, it has seen success among VR enthusiasts and has been making its rounds around schools with the tech giant's distribution programs for the said device. It has even managed to make a deal with the New York Times.

The team behind Google's Cardboard has also attempted to broaden its hold into the tech industry by introducing an integration with GoPro. This new product that was introduced by Bavor during the Google I/O event last May brings virtual reality video to YouTube.

The move of making Bavor officially the VR boss might not be news to everyone as it was observed how he has been spending more time on Cardboard despite having other responsibilities. It might have been expected too as the move only shows that the tech giant is finally taking the threat of its competitors on the budding industry of VR and is now making a move to catch up to them.
