Samsung has been trying everything that would boost their chip manufacturing business after sales of their smartphone began to fall while AMD, who used to excel on building CPUs and GPUs for the PC industry, has also lost their shine. With that happening, Samsung is reportedly going to manufacture CPU and GPU chips for AMD on their 14 nanometer chip by 2016.

Currently, AMD chips are manufactured by GlobalFoundries. The Abu Dhabi owned company used to belong to AMD until they decided to buy out AMD and become a truly independent chip manufacturer. With the 2016 plans in mind, both this Abu Dhabi owned company and the Korean tech company will both be manufacturing the latest AMD Greenland GPUs and Zen CPUs employing the 14 nanometer process that makes the new chips faster and more energy efficient.

AMD has been struggling on their feet for some time now. With Intel and NVIDIA as competitors enticing far more consumers than they can, the company is having financial struggles. It has been reported that due to this problem, they are regretfully lay off about five percent of their 9,700 workforce.

It was also known that recently, the company has been left by two of their key hardware gurus, namely Phil Rogers and Jim Keller. But despite all this troubles, AMD is surviving and currently providing chips for big tech companies like Microsoft and Sony on their Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles.

Samsung, on the other hand, has been in a battle with Apple for dominance on the smartphone industry. Along the way, the Korean tech company is managing to manufacture several chips for Apple devices and also builds GPUs for NVIDIA and other known manufacturers.

With the planned upcoming 14 nanometer process for their latest GPU, the company hopes to be able to catch up with their competitors as the latest products are more efficient and faster than the current chip generation.

If the reports about AMD and Samsung working together is proven to be true and these companies continue to do so, they might prove formidable and manage to have one over Intel, AMD's main competitor.

The more efficient 10 nanometer chips Samsung version is coming out by next year while Intel's version has been confirmed to be slated for a 2017 release.
