Android is reportedly rolling out an update which involves the new emoji. The news has been announced by Android's Senior Vice President Hiroshi Lockheimer on Twitter and will be starting next week with Nexus devices.
According to his posts, the new emoji will be included in an updated system image which will also require a new font, new keyboard, and new code. This means that the update might involve a full system upgrade. Might is a key term here since the Google exec refuses to say more as to not ruin the surprise that is in store for their consumers. Lockheimer's tweet included a unicorn, lion, and a crab emoji also hints on having Unicode 8.0 characters being part of the new Android software update.
There are many emoji options under Unicode 8.0. Some of this includes a hugging, thinking, and a nerd face; a thermometer; a turkey; scorpion; food emoji like a hotdog, taco, popcorn, cheese wedge, burrito, bottle with a popping cork; religious emoji like prayer beads, a synagogue, mosque; sports related emoji like a volleyball, cricket bat and ball, field hockey stick and ball, table tennis paddle and ball, bow and arrow; and a middle finger.
It should be noted that when Apple iOS devices had their iOS 9.1 update, they also received the Unicode 8.0. As of today, Android uses the 6.0 version of Unicode for their emojis. This update would put Android users at par with Apple once the updates start rolling out. Though Lockheimer's post indicated that the Android system update starts with Nexus next week, third party Android OEMs will be the able to decide on when to have the latest update.
Nexus almost always receive Android software updates first because Google directly oversees their development and device supports. Meanwhile, third party OEMs usually modify some of the emojis first, so they usually take time to roll out on Android-run devices from the likes of Samsung, LG, HTC, and Sony. The new emojis are reportedly seen by some users on the Chrome Hangouts app so if one is interested they should probably check that out for now.
It could be recalled that two months ago in October, Lockheimer also dropped the bomb, through twitter, that they have started working on adding new emojis for Android. And looks like it is (almost) finally here!
