In today's society, smartphones are one of the top must-haves. Many tech companies have been investing on the ultimate device and such is observed not only with big companies, but also with small starting companies as well. So it wasn't a surprise that almost every month or week even, we hear news of the latest smartphone from different companies.
That isn't saying that the public won't be surprised to know that another company seems to be joining the list of those who are producing smartphones. What seems to come as a bit of surprise is that this particular one is in no way connected to anything tech, will suddenly produce a smartphone. Pepsi Co., the beverage company known mostly for their saccharine sweet bubbly, fizzy drinks has joined the fray.
It has become apparent that the company is crowd funding a smartphone. The device is said to be made by Chinese manufacturer Koobee and will be sold exclusively in China. As of now, the crowd funding of PepsiCo's smartphone has only ten more days left or has until Dec. 3 to raise the targeted amount of ¥3 million or about $470,000 USD.
According to a statement posted on the website, if the project fails to reach the said amount by the given date, all orders will be cancelled. Chinese consumers can visit the jd.com crowd funding site to reserve their Pepsi Phone P1. For now, the early bird options of ¥499 or $78 USD and ¥699 or $109 USD are already sold out. But consumers can still avail of the PepsiCo phone at ¥999 CNY or ¥1,299. The unit will come with a protective cover, USB cable plus charging accessories.
The 5.5-inch device with 1080 p will be running with a 1.7 GHZ MT6592 SoC. It comes with 2GB RAM and an internal storage of 16GB. It will feature a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front shooter. Talks has been circulating that it will have an Android based operating system called dido. It will be sporting an aluminium unibody design and a fingerprint sensor on the back. It will also have 4G LTE and a dual SIM support. The device is also said to be in blue, gold, and silver colors.
There have been some talks for a while now but there is no clear indication whether PepsiCo will totally venture into the smartphone business. Based on an earlier statement told in a magazine, the company said that they have no plans to get into the mobile manufacturing business. They went on to say that they are just committed on engaging their customers in innovative ways to grow their brand.
This is not the first time that the company has experimented with something tech related. They have, in the past, been experimenting on the Social Vending System which lets a user send beverages as gifts to their friends. This touch screen device also highlights nutritional facts.
