Google has been busy, just yesterday or the other day, we've heard about their project concerning heart disease research and the VR contents for YouTube that they have been developing, and today they made it again at the top of the newsstands. They have just announced that they are making part of their Artificial Intelligence engine open to the public.
The AI engine they are talking about is the TensorFlow. TensorFlow is Google's new machine learning system. It is the successor of Google's old research grade machine learning system called DistBelief. TensorFlow, according to Google, is faster, more flexible and easier to use than its predecessor.
In addition to that, the major difference between the two is that; DistBelief was specifically designed to be directed toward one type of a machine learning system called neutral networks, while TensorFlow is made to accommodate different approaches.
TensorFlow is also the genius behind Google's services like Google Translate, Google Photos and also is the backbone for their features search and Smart Reply. It is a machine learning system that is used to improve Google's products. It can run on thousands of computers in data centers or on a single smartphone.
In a bid to help improve their system more, Google has made TensorFlow open source, meaning a part of this system's code is now accessible to the public. This move allows the community to access their engine and contribute their ideas directly through the code instead of just on research papers. It will also allow companies and other computer programmers around the world to implement machine learning algorithms into their own researches and products.
With this plan, Google is also hoping that the public, from the academic researchers, engineers to plain hobbyists, will be able to exchange ideas quickly and thus help improve the research on TensorFlow.
Google also admits that TensorFlow is still a machine learning system that had just been born and is currently still under development. That's one of the reasons why they are allowing access to the public to check their codes. This will not only help those who tap into it, but also help the company develop it more through the contribution of public's brilliant minds.
