Apple's next-generation iPad models will reportedly be far more power-efficient due to new oxide TFT displays, according to newly-leaked information.

The company is widely rumored to launch a top-notch 12.9-inch tablet later this year, unofficially dubbed as the iPad Pro or the iPad Air Plus. The world's largest LCD panel maker, LG Display, is reportedly investing in eight-generation P8-P9 production-line tech for the purported 12.9-inch iPad in order to remain among Apple's main suppliers.

"Investment to produce 30,000 sheets next year's second quarter have started. Apple is creating iPads with 12.9-inch display, which shows they are increasing the panel size," a "well-informed" LG Display reportedly said under condition of anonymity, as cited by ET News (via GforGames).

Moreover, ET News also claims that Apple will use power-efficient oxide panels in its future iMacs as well, which could further explain LG's purported efforts to expand oxide panel production. Moreover, the publication notes that LG would not have to face stellar costs, as adapting factories to make oxide panels inside a-Si TFT LCD would be easy.

LG Display currently has an output of 9,000 oxide TFT sheets per month from its facilities, but will continue to invest in order to be more productive. ET News claims that LG Display wants to boost its production capacity by as much as 21,000 units, which would translate to a total output of 30,000 sheets per month.

The same report also notes that Apple wants oxide TFT displays for its next-generation iPads from LG Display and Sharp, as well as from Samsung Display. For this reason, LG display wants to better compete against Sharp and Samsung Display and get a bigger piece of the pie.

Sharp reportedly has an output of 30,000 sheets per month for now, while Samsung Display aims to increase production capacity and reach 60,000 sheets per month by the end of this year.

The publication did not offer any additional details regarding the purported 12.9-inch iPad, and it remains unclear at this point just what other specifications it will pack or when it will make its official debut. The oxide TFT IGZO display news sounds quite plausible, butit remains to be seen what will actually materialize. As always, take all leaks with a grain of salt.
