A new tablet called the UbuTab hit the crowdsourcing scene on Indiegogo recently, promising 1TB of internal storage capacity and decent specs at an affordable price point.
The UbuTab is designed with media consumption in mind, sports a near edge-to-edge screen, a built-in stylus, and can run either Ubuntu or Android on the software side.
In terms of hardware specifications, the UbuTab features a 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, an ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, Mali400MP4 quad-core graphics with Open GL ES 2.0 support, 2GB of RAM, and 1TB of internal storage capacity (2.5" Hard Drive or SSD). The tablet further comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera (no front shooter), 16GB of Flash storage, and promises 6 hours of battery life (11,000 mAh). Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. Available ports consist of micro-USB, micro-HDMI, micro-SD (up to 32GB), and headphone (3.5mm).
"Our primary focus with the UbuTab is to provide a fresh and exciting take on mobile computing. We aim to bring desktop capacity storage to the tablet. Innovative advances in the hard drive market have provided us thin and power efficient hard drives that reach up to 1TB in capacity. At only 7mm thick, these drives are 25% slimmer than a traditional laptop hard drive. These slim new drives allowed us to engineer a tablet with massive storage without becoming clunky or thick," reads the description on Indiegogo.
"In addition to the unique and specialized hardware, the UbuTab will come loaded with the Ubuntu OS. Although the Android OS will also be available, we are eager and excited to support a new and exciting OS."
"Let me be clear when saying we are not just trying to make another tablet to compete in the already crowded tablet market. We are simply trying to raise enough money to do a one off production of these great Ubuntu Media tablets. These will more than likely be the only tablets of their kind for quite a while. We are providing a 3 year, free replacement warranty on all parts and labor."
The UbuTab has already raised $15,026 of its $36,000 goal at the time of writing, with 20 more days to go. The $245 and $275 early bird tiers are already sold out, but interested backers can still pledge $290 or more. The crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo will close on Dec. 26, and the first UbuTab units are set to start shipping in March 2015. For more details about this tablet, check out the video below.
