T-Mobile has officially detailed its new wearable-specific data plan for the Samsung Gear S smartwatch, which will make its debut on Nov. 9.
Amid an increasing number of wearable devices, the Samsung Gear S stands out from the crowd due to its built-in 3G connectivity, which allows it to work independently, without necessarily requiring users to pair it with a smartphone or a tablet.
The Samsung Gear S smartwatch with a curved AMOLED touchscreen will become available for purchase from T-Mobile on Nov. 9, but the carrier is already allowing users to pre-register their interest in the device to receive more information as it gets closer to launch.
"Compatible with a variety of Samsung Galaxy smartphones, Samsung's first 4G-connected wearable device helps you live life connected on T-Mobile's Data Strong network - even when your phone isn't on you," T-Mobile touts on its pre-registration page for the Samsung Gear S.
"Finally, a smartwatch that is the perfect complement for your smartphone - as well as a fully capable stand-in that won't miss a beat," further said Jason Young, Senior Vice President, Marketing at T-Mobile, in a company press release. "The Gear S is exactly where this industry is headed - more connected, more intuitive, more personal-and more powerful on T-Mobile's Data Strong network with our new wearable rate plan."
With built-in 3G connectivity, the Samsung Gear S can support basic phone functionality such as taking and making calls, receiving and sending text messages, or going online without a secondary device as a companion. Wearable devices typically use Bluetooth to pair with a 3G/4G-enabled smartphone or tablet in order to achieve such functionality, but the Samsung Gear S can manage on its own.
As a reminder, the Samsung Gear S sports a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 380 x 480, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage capacity, and a 300 mAh battery. On the software side, the Gear S runs Samsung's Tizen OS, not Google's new Android Wear platform. Samsung touted that Tizen has more than 1,000 apps available, at least for wearables, and it will continue to add even more.
As previously mentioned, T-Mobile will be offering a low-cost data plan for the Samsung Gear S 3G smartwatch, specifically designed for such gadgets. The plan will cost $5 per month and come with unlimited talk, text, and data, albeit the data will no longer be at full-speed once a 500MB limit is crossed. As for the price of the gadget itself, T-Mobile will be offering the Samsung Gear S for $14.58 per month for 24 months, or $349.92 upfront.
