Samsung officially unveiled its much-touted Galaxy Alpha smartphone, which sports a metal frame and represents "the evolution of Galaxy Design."

It turns out that rumors pegging the Samsung Galaxy Alpha unveiling for Wednesday, Aug. 13, were accurate, as the company has officially taken the wraps off its new high-end smartphone.

The Galaxy Alpha was widely rumored to launch as the very first Samsung smartphone with a metallic body, ditching the compay's love of plastic. The smartphone is now official and features a stylish metal frame and a beautiful design, marking a notable step forward for Samsung.

The company touts that its new Samsung Galaxy Alpha redefines its smartphone design, offering powerful hardware in a more sophisticated appearance.

"Samsung Electronics unveiled its new design approach with the Galaxy Alpha. The latest addition to Samsung's Galaxy line, the Galaxy Alpha features a sophisticated design in a carefully constructed compact body with a metal frame and a solid finish, while still maintaining the flagship Galaxy experience. Elegant and practical, the Galaxy Alpha is the optimal convergence of style and cutting-edge technology," boasts the press release.

"The Galaxy Alpha was built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer market," added JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communication at Samsung Electronics. "With an entirely new appearance, the Galaxy Alpha focuses on both beauty and functionality combining a stunning metal frame and slim, lightweight design with the same powerful hardware and features users expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device."

"Concentrating on elegant aesthetics and compact construction, Samsung has taken a fresh approach to design with the Galaxy Alpha. Created to help consumers express their unique style without sacrificing functionality, the refined Galaxy Alpha features a sophisticated design with a metal frame, elegantly curved corners and a tactile soft back cover."

Specs

In terms of specifications, the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha sports a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and packs an octa-core chipset under the hood, most likely an Exynos SoC, with four cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four clocked at 1.3GHz. The handset also comes in a quad-core flavor clocked at 2.5GHz, likely in the form of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor.

Other specs include 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage capacity, a 12-megapixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front shooter, and a 1,860 mAh battery. It's worth pointing out that storage is not expandable, as the Galaxy Alpha does not come with microSD support.

The smartphone further boasts LTE Cat. 6 support, which is able to deliver LTE-A speeds of up to 300Mbps at peak download rates. Other connectivity options include micro-USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE, 3G, and NFC. Just like the Galaxy S5, the new Galaxy Alpha also features a fingerprint scanner for extra security.

Samsung said that its new Galaxy Alpha will make a global debut in September, reaching more than 150 countries. The company has yet to offer pricing details for the device, but revealed that it will come in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue color options. Intrigued?
