Microsoft has an event set for Sept. 23 in New York, where the company is expected to unveil its next-generation Surface tablets.
Rumors and leaks pointing to an upcoming Microsoft Surface 2 tablet have been making rounds recently and it now seems that an official announcement is just around the corner.
With Microsoft sending out press invites to the Sept. 23 event, rumors are only intensifying in an attempt to anticipate exactly what kind of products may debut at this event.
Microsoft currently has only the Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets in its lineup, and both slates have recently received price cuts. The discounts further fueled speculation that the company is clearing out existing inventory to make room for the next-generation Surface tablets.
CNET has posted the invitation it received from Microsoft and shared some interesting information. The publication learned from DisplaySearch that Microsoft's new Surface RT will finally make the jump to Full HD, which would allow it to better compete against Android and iOS rivals.
"'What we're seeing is that it's 1,920x1,080, Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch, told CNET," wrote the publication.
Surface RT tablets were not very popular, but a higher-resolution display, along with improved overall specifications, might help Microsoft turn things around with the second generation.
Previous rumors claimed that the new Microsoft Surface RT would pack a Tegra 4 processor and run on the 8.1 version of Windows RT. The second-generation slate would reportedly be called the Surface 2.
The Surface 2 is also expected to launch alongside a Microsoft Surface Pro 2, which would boast a 10.6-inch Full HD display, a fourth-generation Intel Core i5 processor and Windows 8.1 Pro.
Other rumors, meanwhile, indicated that Microsoft might also have a Surface Mini slate in the works. The purported device reportedly packs a Qualcomm processor (unspecified), an 8-inch screen (resolution remains unknown at this point) and Windows RT 8.1.
It's all in the rumor state for now, but with Sept. 22 just around the corner, Microsoft will soon unveil more details about its upcoming devices. The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 will most likely make their debut at the New York event, so stay tuned.
