"Kindle Fire HD is the #1 best-selling item in the world for Amazon since its launch, and we're thrilled to make it available to even more customers around the globe today," Dave Limp, VP of Amazon Kindle, boasts in the press release. "Not only does Kindle Fire feature advanced hardware, it's also a service. When combined with our content ecosystem, great email and browsing and top-rated customer service, we hope people around the world will agree that Kindle Fire HD is the best tablet for an incredible price."

The content Limp mentions consists of millions of apps, games, magazines and e-books, including 300,000+ books available exclusively through Amazon's Kindle Store.

The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels at a pixel density of 254 pixels per inch (ppi), a dual-core TI OMAP 4470 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 1GB of RAM and Dolby Digital Plus audio. The slate comes in either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage configurations.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, meanwhile, sports an HD display with a 1,280 x 800 resolution "that delivers deep, detailed contrast and rich, natural color," as described in the press release.

In other related news, the Amazon Appstore for Android is now up and running in nearly 200 countries, according to another press release. This geographic expansion comes two months after the retail giant announced wider availability of its 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan. In the U.S., the Kindle Fire HD slates started shipping back in November 2012.
