ADR Studio created an Instagram concept camera called Socialmatic back in 2012, and now Polaroid wants to make it a reality.
Socialmatic signed an agreement for a production, Polaroid-branded version of its digital camera concept, turning the mobile app's popular retro icon into a real-world, physical product.
Details of the deal remain unknown for now, but the new gadget will be called "Polaroid Socialmatic Camera." And yes, the Instagram camera will have instant printing capabilities. Socialmatic LLC signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with C&A Licensing, LLC, and authorized Polaroid licensee. Under the agreement, C&A Licensing will have the rights to produce a Polaroid-branded instant digital camera.
"We are so proud to work together with C & A and Polaroid, giants of digital photography," touts Socialmatic CEO Antonio de Rosa. "It's been a long and difficult negotiation but we were strongly motivated to reach an agreement to create a small revolution in digital photography. The mix of Hardware and Software, together with our brand new photo digital network will fill the gap between virtuality and reality."
Details about the actual product specs are yet to surface, but the concept mock-ups are based on the retro Instagram icon design. If Polaroid retains the concept specs, the Socialmatic instant digital camera could sport a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, 16GB of internal storage, Wi-FI and Bluetooth connectivity, LED flash, interchangeable lens, as well as a built-in printer and support for various types of ink cartridges. The original Socialmatic concept wanted to include QR codes as well for each printed picture, in a bid to facilitate sharing printed pictures.
It remains unclear for now whether the real-world Socialmatic camera will be a single-purpose shooter designed specifically to capture, print and share Instagram pictures like the original concept, or whether it will reach out to other social networks. If the Socialmatic digital camera comes with powerful features and an appealing price tag, it has quite a great potential for success. The Instagram app is already very popular worldwide, and an Instagram camera would likely appeal to plenty of users or so-called "hipsters."
