Christmas Day 2012 shattered records on the number of iOS and Android devices activated as well as the number of apps that were downloaded. A staggering 17.4 million devices were activated and 328 million apps were downloaded on that day alone. As impressive as those numbers are, the total number of activations and apps downloaded for the week of December 25 - December 31, 2012 are equally impressive.

Flurry Analytics is reporting that over 50 million iOS and Android devices were activated and 1.76 billion apps were downloaded during the period between December 25 to December 31, 2012. If you compare those numbers to the same period in 2011 of 20 million activations and 1.2 billion app downloads it's a dramatic increase over the previous year.

Flurry Analytics provided the above graph comparing the number of iOS & Android apps downloaded during December 25 - 31 compared to the weekly average during December 4 - December 17 .

These reported numbers show that more and more people are choosing mobile devices over more traditional desktop and laptop systems. It clearly shows consumers are becoming increasingly more comfortable with the idea of choosing a smartphone or tablet over a computer.

Flurry analytics does not breakdown the difference in activations of iOS devices versus Android devices but according to a report and Google's Android Chief Andy Rubin, we have some insight to see how they actually compare. There were 4.2 million million iOS devices activated on Christmas Day versus 3.7 million Android devices. The data suggests more iOS devices were activated during the period due to very strong sales of the iPad and iPad mini.
