Yelp fans who use the app on Android devices are in for a treat, as the newest version of the app adds cool new features.
The local directory service has just received a much-needed update to version 3.7, just in time for the holidays. The updated version of Yelp for Android now comes with Yelp Talk, as well as an integrated action bar to make things easier and smoother.
Yelp is a popular app for finding and reading useful reviews about local businesses nearby, whether it's a burrito joint, a lawyer's office, an Irish pub, or the nearest gas station. Yelp is designed to help users find places to eat, drink, shop, relax, and what not.
The addition of Yelp Talk makes the app a bit more social, allowing users to talk about or recommend their favorite things by starting and replying to threads about a specific venue. It remains to be seen just how well it works, but so far it sounds like a good way to discover worthy recommendations made by users with similar interests.
Meanwhile, the new action bar addition to the user interface (UI) aims to make navigation easier within the app. Moreover, users who are the first to add a tip for a business will now receive a little gratification in the form of a "First to Tip" award.
In terms of design, the updated app seems to have been infected by a big grey bar that appears at the bottom of the map, decreasing the amount of visible content on the UI. Yelp likely had its reasons to include it. Probably.
On the bright side, the updated Yelp for Android app now has a three-dot menu button, and it also got the standard action bar back button.
Last but not least, because the holidays are just around the corner, Yelp version 3.7 did not forget to pack up a little holiday cheer. The Yelp logo is now all dressed up in wintery christmasy stuff, all ready for download ahead of the holidays.
Speaking of download, Yelp for Android version 3.7 is now up for grabs from the Google Play store.
