On Wednesday, Nov. 7, DC Comics announced that it is getting its entire line up of periodical comics including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and more to major e-bookstores like iBookstore, Kindle Store, and NOOK Store.
DC Entertainment, the parent company of DC Comics, is currently the number one comic publisher in the U.S. The digital availability brings best-selling DC Comics and Vertigo periodical titles, which includes Justice League, Batman, Superman, Detective Comics, Aaction Comics, et al to an even broader audience of digital readers.
"As e-readers and tablets continue to explode in popularity it's important for us to offer consumers convenience and choice in how they download digital comics and these new distribution deals with the top three e-bookstores do just that," said Jim Lee, co-publisher, DC Entertainment," said Jim Lee, co-publisher, DC Entertainment. "We're very excited to work with Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble to bring bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodicals to their e-bookstores."
The move now makes DC Entertainment the only comic publisher to offer its entire periodical line-up across all major e-bookstore platforms. DC Entertainment brought the New 52 line-up digitally on both iOS and Android through its own and third-party app run by ComiXology. However, now users have the option to download the series from e-bookstores.
Lee further added, "We were the first to offer our entire comic book line same-day digital and now we are the first to offer fans the convenience of multiple download options."
CNET reports that digital comic sales have increased by 197 percent when comparing January to September 2011 sales figures to January to September 2012 sales. On the other hand, the print sales during the same period increased just by 12 percent.
With the increase in demand for e-Readers, users will also want to read their favorite comics on-the-go without the risk of losing the comic book.
DC Entertainment is one of the comic books publishers to bring their comic books to all major e-bookstores. Time will tell if rival comic book publishers like Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, etc. will join the bandwagon and get their comics on all major e-bookstores soon.
