Google recently launched the Pixel 9 series, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL has quickly become the focus of attention, especially after Zack from JerryRigEverything conducted his well-known durability tests.
The new Pixel 9 Pro XL survived these rigorous tests, showcasing its resilience. Now, the YouTube content creator has returned with an in-depth teardown of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, offering insights into the device's internal design and repairability.
One of the most notable revelations from Zack's teardown is the Pixel 9 Pro XL's relatively easy disassembly process, largely due to its new dual-entry design. This design innovation has made the phone more accessible for repairs compared to its predecessors. iFixit, another prominent tech repair channel, echoed this sentiment in their teardown, agreeing that the Pixel 9 Pro XL is indeed easier to disassemble than previous models.
Zack highlighted the use of less common T4 screws around the cameras and charging port, which contribute to the device's sturdy construction. However, he also pointed out some challenges during the teardown, such as hidden screws concealed under random pieces of black tape.
While the initial disassembly is straightforward, reassembling the phone is complicated by the varying sizes of screws and the abundance of small, delicate brackets that could easily break, according to GSM Arena.

Despite the improvements in design, the Pixel 9 Pro XL's battery removal process remains problematic. Both Zack and iFixit noted that Google has once again glued the battery to the phone's body, making it difficult to remove. The Pixel 9 Pro XL features a pull tab mechanism intended to simplify battery removal, but it struggles to slice through the strong adhesive.
Removing the battery requires a significant amount of isopropyl alcohol and careful prying, a process that Zack found frustrating.
"From a repairability standpoint, I cannot recommend this phone to anyone," Zack said, suggesting that there's a challenge made because of the battery design.
This issue has persisted across multiple generations of Pixel phones, and while the new Pixel series may be more durable, its repairability still leaves much to be desired.
The Pixel 9 Pro XL teardown reveals a mixed bag for potential buyers. On one hand, the new dual-entry design marks a significant step forward in making the device easier to disassemble and repair, especially when compared to earlier models. However, the persistent challenge of battery removal is a glaring drawback that undermines the overall repairability of the phone.
For users who prioritize durability and ease of repair, the Pixel 9 Pro XL may not be the ideal choice despite its robust build quality.
Google has made improvements in certain areas, but there's still room for improvement, particularly in making key components like the battery more accessible for repairs. As always, potential buyers should weigh these factors carefully before making a decision.
