The recent rollout of the Android 14 update has resulted in a widespread problem affecting various Pixel phone models. Unlike the previous storage lockout issue on Pixel 6, this time, it is linked to the January 2024 Google Play System Update, causing users to face difficulties accessing internal storage across all apps.

Google Investigates Widespread Storage Access Issues in Pixel Devices Following January Update

Reddit posts reveal over 10 reports of this issue over the past few weeks, encompassing Pixel 8, Pixel 7, and Pixel 6 series devices, including Pixel A series models.

Notably, this problem appears to be more widespread than the one experienced last year, which was limited to the Pixel 6 and affected users utilizing the multiple users feature on Android. This recurrence emphasizes the need for prompt resolution and heightened quality control in Android updates to prevent such disruptions across a broader user base.

Users experiencing difficulties accessing internal storage through their phone's apps due to the January 2024 Google Play System Update are encountering disruptions in media viewing. Although workarounds may exist for specific services, the widespread and varied reports suggest a broader impact on different applications.

Google has acknowledged the issue, stating they are currently aware of it and are looking into it, according to a comment on a news site.

As of writing, there is no specified timeline for resolving the problem. In a previous instance, the problem was linked to the use of multiple users on Pixel devices. While it remains unconfirmed for the current situation, Pixel users employing multiple profiles are advised to refrain from installing the January update until the matter is addressed. Some individuals have reported success with the update. Still, these instances are primarily from users who do not utilize the multiple users feature, emphasizing the need for further clarification from Google.

The Same Issue Resurfaced After 3 Months

In a recurring issue for Pixel users, the storage bug that originally surfaced in October 2023 with Android 14 has resurfaced again. The problem mainly affects Pixel 6 users with multiple profiles on their devices. The symptoms include internal storage failure to mount, camera malfunctions, the Files app displaying no files, inability to save screenshots, and empty internal storage in ADB Shell.

While Google had addressed this internal storage access problem with a patch in November, recent reports suggest a resurgence of the issue after the latest update, causing inconvenience and disruptions for affected users.

Thankfully, the widespread impact of the recurring storage bug with the January 2024 Google Play System update appears limited, as the update hasn't reached the majority of devices. Users can verify their Google Play version by navigating to Settings, Security & Privacy, and finally, System and Updates.

While some users have smoothly installed the new update, those still on the November version might consider postponing the update until Google issues a confirmation, mainly if multiple profiles are in use.

This cautious approach aims to prevent potential complications associated with the resurfacing storage bug linked to the latest Play System update.
