Mindfulness is growing in popularity, and those of us who get freaked out by road rage hope it keeps catching on. Part of the reason more people are meditating is because the barrier for entry as a student of meditation is lower than ever before. You don't have to set sail to India like members of The Beatles did 50-something years ago; you don't even have to get dressed and drive to a yoga studio. All you need is your mobile phone and one of these five award-winning mindfulness apps.
Calm: Best Use of Matthew McConaughey in a Mindfulness App
Alright, alright, alright. Calm is one of the mindfulness apps slugging it out to be at the top of the meditation industry. The app comes with several courses, such as Managing Stress, 21 Days of Calm, and Body Scan. Or, you can simply key up the daily meditation, which is usually just shy of 10 minutes. Calm won the Apple App of the Year award in 2017. In addition to the guided meditations, Calm also includes a feature called "Sleep Stories" to help you fall asleep at bedtime, and many of these stories are voiced by celebrities, such as Stephen Fry and, glory be, Matthew McConaughey.
Ten Percent Happier: Best App for Complete Skeptics
The basic premise behind Ten Percent Happier is that a professional news anchor - and Type A personality - named Dan Harris skeptically dipped a toe in the pool of meditation and discovered that it helped him gain an edge. Since he's a TV guy, the app splits each meditation between (a) a short video in which Dan interviews a mindfulness teacher, and (b) the actual meditation with that teacher. Whereas the Calm app focuses on helping you relax, Ten Percent Happier teaches you how to cope when you aren't relaxed. The book Dan wrote before he built the app won the 2014 Living Now Book Award for Inspirational Memoir.
YouTube: Best Use of a Thing Called "Free"
Did you know that you can meditate with the award-winning YouTube app? Search for guided meditation videos, and you'll be able scroll through all kinds of options. Because the app is free, you'll have to deal with a lack of organization and the potential annoyance of ads, but like we said, it's free. And maybe you can meditate that annoyance away!
Spotify: The Mindfulness App Least Known as a Mindfulness App
You can meditate with Spotify, too. Try it. Search for "meditation," and you'll find relaxing music, meditation podcasts, and even guided meditations. Chances are that you already use Spotify to listen to music and podcasts, so this has the added bonus of you not needing to download another app. Spotify has won plenty of awards throughout its existence, although we hope ours will be displayed above all the others.
Insight Timer: Best Free Mindfulness App That Turned Into a Something More
Insight Timer is a mindfulness app that got its start as a timer to help you know when the period of time you wanted to meditate for has passed. Why not just use the timer on your phone? This one has lovely little meditation bells so you're not jolted out of a trance by that thing that wakes you up for work on Monday mornings. You could also opt for relaxing background sounds and multiple time notifications throughout your meditation, which is especially helpful for chanting. In addition, there was a free "How to Meditate" course; each lesson in the course taught you a different technique, such as body scanning, following your breath, tracking sounds, and so on. On top of that, there were hundreds of free user-uploaded meditations in a wide variety of categories, may by award-winning teachers. Now they're pushing premium content with higher production value and more streamlined organization. The best way to describe Insight Timer is that it's the mindfulness app for people who want a mindfulness app but want to do their own thing, too.
And there you have it: five award-winning mindfulness apps. If we gave a physical award ceremony, we would use our mobile phones to look for a company that makes those crystal award plaques (like this one - they even have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which might be good if someone didn't like their award). Sadly, we don't have a ceremony planned, so this article will have to do.
