Hewlett Packard (HP) has unveiled a next-generation Windows 8 tablet, the ElitePad 900, which will hit the shelves in early 2013. The HP ElitePad 900 is touted as an ultra-thin tablet that balances functionality and design.

The ElitePad 900 was designed primarily with businesses and the government in mind. Even though the tablet is mainly targeted at enterprise users, it will also appeal to consumers.

Along with an ultra-slim battery, which will support longer use, the tablet sports a 10.1-inch HD display and weighs only 24 ounces, courtesy of its lightweight Corning Gorilla Glass 2 covering and the .36-inch thick aluminum case. The tablet has a 16:10 aspect ratio. The latest Intel mobile processor powers the device, which is available in 32/64GB or SSD storage. It features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1080p front-facing camera. The tablet will run on Windows 8 and supports pen-, touch-, or voice- based input. Users can also customize their tablet with specific add-ons.

Like HP's line up of Elite PCs, the tablet offers enhanced security and manageability. The device also has "military-grade durability for drops, vibration, dust, temperature extremes and high altitude."

"Businesses used to face a tough purchase decision: How to find a product that will delight employees and help them be more productive, while also making sure IT can secure and manage it," said Todd Bradley, EVP Printing and Personal Systems, HP. "The HP ElitePad meets all those tests. It combines the great style and user experience consumers demand with the features IT requires."

The tablet features "Smart Jackets", which enable its placement on a number of jacket accessories to give users functionality options. The tablet's Productivity Jacket, for instance, adds an integrated keyboard, an SD card reader, and connectivity ports. The Expansion Jacket adds USB, HDMI, and other connectivity option to the tablet, including the option to have a second battery. The ElitePad 900 will also have several accessories: a docking station, stylus, and a robust case.

The ElitePad 900 will launch in January 2013; however, details of the tablet's pricing are not yet known.
