Copenhagen-based audio company Libratone is known for manufacturing quirky speakers, and the company claims that its latest, the Zipp wireless speaker, is the "first and only device" that allows for a wireless playback without a Wi-Fi network.
The Zipp is AirPlay compatible, and users can connect their iOS devices to the speakers via a direct Wi-Fi connection rather than over an existing Wi-Fi network alone, since the speaker creates its own Wi-Fi hotspot. Connecting devices to the Zipp is similar to connecting to any Wi-Fi network. According to Libratone Chairman Soren Pedersen, the direct connection feature is unique to Zipp and enables more date to be transferred.
"We wanted to design a speaker that makes high-end sound portable and truly wireless," said Tommy Andersen, CEO of Libratone. "Similar to a pair of headphones, Libratone Zipp follows you wherever you go - around the house, to work, in the park or on holiday."
The Zipp weighs 4 ounces, which is fairly hefty for a portable speaker, and gets its name from its replaceable zip-on cover. The colourful interchangeable cases are made of Italian cashmere, and the speaker is billed as a device that users would want to display in their home. It also comes with a leather hand strap.
Libratone's FullRoom technology enables 360 degree sound, and iOS users can download the Libratone app and modify the bass and sound levels through their mobile device. The Zipp also has the ability to adjust and maximize sound quality based on the speaker's physical location, such as distance from the ground or wall. The built-in battery allows for four hours of continuous Wi-Fi usage, with the option to plug in the speakers to an electrical outlet; the Zipp supports up to 8 hours of audio when plugged in.
Libratone's Zipp is expected to hit the shelves by October end and will be available in several color variants. The "Classic Color Collection" will have black, red, and blue wool zip-ups, whereas the "Funky Color Collection" will offer black, pink, and yellow options. Both collections will be priced at $449. Alternately, consumers can purchase the sleeves individually for $50 each. An exclusive grey- or red-covered version of the speaker will be sold for $399 at Apple Stores.
