On Sept. 26, Mountain View-based Google reported that its app store had reached the milestone of 25 billion downloads. To celebrate its recent accomplishment, the company's Google Play store is offering users a substantial discount, and an assortment of apps and games will be available for as little as 25 cents.

Google's discounted pricing is in keeping with its "25" theme, and the sale will last for 5 days. In addition to games and apps, Android users will have access to several special collections commemorating the occasion which include: "25 movies you must own," "25 albums that changed the world," "25 banned books," and "25 best-selling magazines."

"We've just added more great apps for 25c only to the #25billion collection: Shark Dash, Cut the Rope, FIFA, Paper Camera & World of Goo, just to name a few. Which apps are you adding to your #Android apps collection?" asks the Google Play post.

Users will be able to choose from a wide range of apps from top developers like Gameloft, Rovio, Electronic Arts, Runtastic, and Full Fat. Some of the games available are: Angry Birds Space Premium, Asphalt 7: Heat, The Cat in the Hat, Clouds & Sheep Premium, Draw Something, Granny Smith, Let's Create! Pottery, London Bus Checker, NFL Kicker 13, Ocean HD, OfficeSuite Pro 6+, Runtastic PRO, Sudoku, Symphony of Eternity, and Tasks.

Google Play store was re-launched in March of this year as a rebranded integration of the Android Market and Google Music. The store offers nearly 675,000 apps, which is only 25,000 fewer than the rival Apple Store's total app offerings.

At the Apple event on Sept. 12, CEO Tim Cook announced that the company's app store boasts 700,000 apps. With Apple launching the iPhone 5, its app store downloads are poised to increase over the next few months.

However, with a slew of Android-powered devices anticipated to hit the shelves soon, including Samsung's hotly-anticipated Galaxy Note 2, the Google Play store is on track to surpass its 25 billion download landmark.
