UK-based Oxford Metrics Group (OMG) has unveiled Autographer, an "intelligent" wearable camera that takes pictures automatically thanks to its in-built sensors. The Autographer is a small camera that features a wide angle lens, and the device can be worn on a lanyard or clipped to the user's outfit.

The camera is able to detect changes in environment, color, direction, temperature, and motion. Its sensitive software builds on these alterations to decide if it will take a picture. The device's sensors "capture metadata alongside the images," which basically means that users can recreate a digital record of their activities for a particular day, everything from the places he/she visited to the day's temperature

"The beauty of Autographer is that you don't have to stop to take a photo or spend your day looking at life through a lens. You can live your experiences to the full while Autographer spontaneously captures the stories that happen all around you," stated Simon Randall, Head of OMG Life.

The innocuous-looking Autographer is 1.47 inches wide and 3.54 inches tall and weighs just 2.04 ounces. The .90-inch thick device uses a semi-fisheye lens with a 136 degree angle of view.

"We've spent a lot of time developing our wide-angle eye-view lens which is at the heart of the Autographer's story-telling ability. It gives a unique first-person perspective that allows the wearer to tell their story uninhibited as they see it," said Randall.

The Autographer has a 5-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor and the shutter is triggered based on outputs from GPS and the five in-built sensors: accelerometer, magnetometer, color sensor, PIR, and temperature.

The device packs in 8GB of on-board storage, and the battery will last for more than a day on a single charge. Images are stored in the internal memory and can be transferred via Bluetooth to a user's smartphone. Additionally, the Autographer app enables users to send the images to themselves or post them directly to sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Initially, the Autographer was developed to aid people who suffer from early-onset dementia, and have failing short-term memories, to recollect details of their daily activities. The device was developed in conjunction with Microsoft's research team in Cambridge, UK. OMG spotted the probable mass appeal of the device and joined forces with media agency BBH to develop the product for the consumer market.

OMG is of the opinion that the Autographer will appeal to users who wish to record an event without manually operating a camera. The device will also be a valuable tool for documentary photographers.

The Autographer is slated for a November launch in the UK and will be priced at £399 ($650). It will be available via autographer.com.
