Just weeks after the release of iOS 10.3, Apple has now once again rolled out a brand new update in the form of iOS 10.3.1. The release of the update came as a surprise for most users as Apple hadn't really made any official announcement regarding its roll out.
According to Forbes, the update is considered to be just a minor one. This is clearly the case as Apple hadn't released a beta for it to test it out before its release. As for the update's contents, Apple merely stated in the accompanying release notes that the update contained several bug fixes and slight improvements to the security of iPhones and iPads.
As per Apple Insider, one of the fixes that have been included with iOS 10.3.1 is its compatibility with the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5c. iOS 10.3 was actually pulled out for both devices shortly after its release, but it seems like developers have finally now fixed the problem.
The main issue with both devices is that they are actually the last iPhone models to sport a 32-bit processor in the form of the Apple A6 chip. All other models after the iPhone 5 now have 64-bit processors. Based on the release notes for the recently released iOS 10.3.2 beta, Apple will soon drop the support for 32-bit devices for all other incoming updates.
As previously mentioned, iOS 10.3.1 is a minuscule update compared to iOS 10.3. The latter officially marked Apple's transition to its new APFS file system from its 30-year old HFS+ file system. The update also brought with it a myriad of brand new features including a new Find My AirPods service, a Podcast app widget, improved animation, a new iCloud section, revamped settings menu, and other tweaks.
For users who have not yet received a notification to upgrade their operating systems, the update can be initiated by either connecting to iTunes or by going to Settings > General > Software Update on their device. iOS 10.3.1 will be less than 30MB, so it shouldn't take long to upgrade.
