Looks like smartphone lovers will have something to shout about soon in the form of a Surface Phone with a foldable screen.

If a recently discovered patent is anything to go by, Microsoft is currently hard at works on the long-rumored Surface phone. The most striking feature of the upcoming Surface Phone? It's foldable form factor.

Microsoft Surface Phone: Foldable Design

Twitter user WalkingCat (@h0x0d) tweeted a link to a patent from Microsoft for a clam-shell hinge device. The aforesaid patent was filed about a couple of years ago but became available only recently.

It can be recalled that the Redmond-based tech titan had filed patents for gadgets using hinges before; however, the above-mentioned patent not only details mobile devices, but also large, tiled devices. In other words, Microsoft is hinting at a multi-layered screen comprising panels with curved edges which are placed under a single upper layer.

Microsoft's plan behind choosing this form of design, according to The Indian Express is creating an illusion with the curves to give the whole display a hingeless appearance.

The filing further explains that in order to minimize and/or conceal the visualness of a support structure between tiled display devices, can be placed in a way that supports are completely hidden from the end-user when viewed from specific angles.

Thus, when a user is looking at a part occupied by the support panel, he/she will be able to see light from the display panel showing the objects.

The company has divulged in the past that it is likely to come out with a Surface Phone at some point. Lining with this statement, Microsoft's chief executive Satya Nadella explained the company doesn't want to launch just another conventional smartphone that functions and looks like rest of the devices currently available in the market, but one that boasts something exclusive to the Surface Phone. It remains to be seen if he was alluding to a foldable form factor.

Details about Windows Surface Phone with the foldable screen are hard to come by; however, more shreds of information are likely to surface online sooner rather than later. Stay tuned in here for more Surface Phone related news and updates!
