Google's Android Auto is the Android OS for your car with a large touch interface for getting directions, playing music and keeping in touch with people while you're on the road. This is similar to Apple's CarPlay with one significant difference; Android Auto is also available for your Android device.

According to T3, the interface of the Android Auto is designed with drivers in mind. Menus and icons are larger and voice control is supported. The core of the app is Maps, music apps and communication. You can also set a default reply to be sent to someone that messaged you, telling that person that you're on the road and unable to reply. Meanwhile, your recent calls are listed for easy access.

Apps such as Spotify, Facebook Messenger and Skype are compatible with the Android Auto. For other apps, developers need to upgrade their apps for it to be compatible. The app can be launched automatically when it detects a Bluetooth device such as your car stereo, or manually whichever you prefer.

Meanwhile, Apple's CarPlay is only available on car dashboard units and not as a separated app like the Android Auto, although, neither platform has an advantage over the other.

Car manufacturers are developing head units that support both the Android Auto and CarPlay so that users are able to switch between them as they please. The CarPlay has all the features that you would expect from Apple such as simpler interface. Your iOS device streams information to a CarPlay unit so it really depends on the users on how they will control their device on-the-go through an interface that's suited to being operated while driving.
