With Amazon launching a slew of new tablets on Sept. 6, the million-dollar question is whether the new 7-inch Kindle Fire HD can better the original Kindle Fire's success. Here is a look at how the two tablets measure up against each other.

Display

The new Kindle Fire sports a 7-inch HD LCD screen, whereas the original Kindle Fire features a 7-inch display with IPS technology. The new Kindle Fire HD, Amazon claims, has the "most advanced 7'' display," and unlike other tablets in the category, it "delivers rich color and deep contrast from every angle, with an advanced polarizing filter and custom anti-glare technology." Additionally, the new Fire improves on its predecessor's screen resolution from 1024 x 600 pixels(221 ppi) to 1280 x 800 pixels (169 ppi)

Size and Weight

The new Kindle Fire HD 7 measures 7.6 inches x 5.4 inches x 0.4 inches, compared to the original Fire's 7.5 inches x 4.7 inches x 0.44 inches. At 395g, the new Kindle Fire is fractionally lighter than the original model, which weighs 413g.

Processor and Operating System

A 1.2GHz dual-core OMAP4460 processor with "Imagination PowerVR 3D graphics core for fast and fluid performance" powers the new Kindle Fire HD. By contrast, a dual-core 1GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processor powers the original Kindle Fire. The new Kindle Fire HD also has double the memory of the original: 1GB of RAM vis-à-vis 512MB. The Kindle Fire HD will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, which is an improvement on the original Fire's older Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.

Storage and Connectivity

The orginal Kindle Fire offers 8GB of internal storage, whereas the Kindle Fire HD will be available in both 16GB and 32GB variants. Neither device has an expandable memory option via a microSD slot.

Connectivity

Both devices are Wi-Fi enabled. However, the original Fire supports 802.11 b/g/n as opposed to the new Kindle Fire HD's 802.11 a/b/g/n options. Additionally, the new Kindle Fire HD comes with Bluetooth support, a feature that was absent in the original model.

Camera

The original Kindle Fire does not have a camera. On the other hand, the Kindle Fire HD sports a front-facing snapper. Users can even make Skype video calls with the front-facing HD camera.

Battery

Both tablets have a non-removable battery. The 4400mAh battery of the original Kindle Fire offers up to 8 hours of reading time. The Kindle Fire HD's battery is expected to support up to 11 hours of reading time. The exact details of the battery's size are not available, but it is expected to be larger than that of the original model.

Pricing and Availability

The original Kindle Fire is priced at $199.99 for the 8GB, which is the same price tag as the new Kindle Fire HD's 16GB version. Moreover, Amazon has priced the upgraded non-HD Kindle Fire version (still an improvement on the original version) at $159. The new Kindle Fire HD's 32GB offerings will cost $249. The new Kindle Fire HD tablet is currently available for pre-order and will ship from Oct. 25.
