The Sept. 12 launch of Apple's new iPhone 5 is only a few weeks away and as the impending launch date nears, rumors, leaks, and mockups of the smartphone seem to be surfacing by the dozen. A new hands-on video, courtesy of GSM Israel, shows a fully-assembled iPhone 5 in all its glory.
"GSM Israel says it stumbled upon the device at the booth of a third party accessory maker during its normal tour of the IFA show floor in Berlin on Saturday. The device in the video appears fairly similar to the dozens of earlier leaked enclosures said to represent the new iPhone," according to an AppleInsider report.
The silver and white two-tone handset features aluminum edges and buttons. It appears to fit with circulating rumors and sports a 4-inch display and smaller dock connector.
However, closer inspection reveals that in all likelihood the video footage is a clever mockup. AppleInsider scrutinized the iPhone 5 video in detail and its findings raise questions over the device's authenticity. Apparently, a close examination of the video discloses that the markings on the back of the alleged iPhone 5 read "Model NO. A1303". This model number is attributed to Apple's iPhone 3GS. Additionally, the FCC ID "BCGA1303A", which is displayed in the video was the ID for the older iPhone 3GS model.
Moreover, the screen of the device seems to be made of synthetic material rather than Apple's Gorilla Glass. All evidence seems to point to a dummy iPhone 5 rather than an authentic one. Experts say that the alleged handset seems to have been crafted based on the floating feature rumors and leaked schematics.
Additionally, third-party accessory manufacturers are often able to glean information and spec details of Apple's next-generation iDevices from various sources, including conjectures. Manufacturers usually start accessory production in anticipation of the iDevice launch. Therefore, GSM Israel's stumbling upon the device at a third-party accessory maker's stall at IFA seems to be of little consequence.
Mockup Apple products are not a novelty and, in the past, have served as curtain-raisers to the official roll out. Earlier in January this year, prior to the new iPad launch, mockups of the tablet were spotted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
