Many companies likely get assaulted daily by users asking for free stuff, but most of them probably ignore the requests and go about their business. Samsung, however, has won the Internet with its latest deed: it has just made one loyal fan happy by offering a free, one-of-a-kind Galaxy S3. For the lucky Canadian Redditor, this is Internet karma at its finest.
It all started in May, when Samsung unveiled its hot new flagship smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S3 had not made its debut in Canada at the time; it was expected to arrive in June in North America. One bold Canadian, however, tried his luck on Samsung Canada's Facebook page and asked for a free Galaxy S3.
Shane, 26, wrote a message on Samsung's Facebook page saying that he already owned a Samsung LCD TV, a Samsung Laptop, and a first-generation Galaxy S handset, and inquired whether his loyalty to the company would be worth a free Galaxy S3. Not to ask for pure charity, Shane traded in a cute drawing of a quirky dragon blowing fire and going "RAWR."
Samsung Canada responded shortly after, but instead of a new phone the 26-year-old Canadian got a drawing of a kangaroo riding a unicycle.
"Hey Shane. Thanks for inquiring about scoring a free Galaxy S III," Samsung wrote in response. "Unfortunately if we gave a free S III to everyone who asked, we'd probably be out before they ever went on sale, and we'd go under as a company. That being said, your drawing of the dragon is epic, so we're returning the favour. Please find attached a drawing of a kangaroo on a unicycle."
Amused by Samsung's prompt response on the same funny note, Shane posted the private conversation on Reddit, "the front page of the Internet," thus indirectly helping the company get huge attention. The Reddit post soon went viral, reaching the "hot" section of the popular Web site in just a few hours. The post's great popularity came to Samsung's attention, and the company decided to repay the favor by granting the loyal fan's wish.
Shane became the proud owner of a sizzling Galaxy S3, with the quirky dragon drawing adorning the backside of the handset. In addition to the custom backart, Samsung also threw in a special background to match up artwork on the bezel. According to Samsung Canada, the phone is one-of-a-kind, and it's the only customized Galaxy S3 in the country. In fact, the dragon-guarded Galaxy S3 is likely unique in the whole world.
