Microsoft has finally released the official SkyDrive App for Android in the Google Play Store. This is a free application that allows Android users to gain access to their files and folders on SkyDrive.com, Microsoft's cloud storage solution which competes with Google Drive and DropBox. The new SkyDrive App for Android not only allow users to view files, but provides the option to upload files to the service.

Unlike the official Windows Phone SkyDrive App, the Android version allow users to upload multiple files simultaneously, something many users of Windows Phone devices have been craving. It is surprising to see this needed feature being brought to Android first instead of Microsoft's own mobile platform.

Detailed list of features:

  • Access your SkyDrive-documents, photos, and other files, plus the files other people have shared with you.
  • View recently used documents.
  • Choose multiple photos or videos to upload from your phone.
  • Share your files and photos-send a link in email or in another app.
  • Open your SkyDrive files from other Android apps.
  • Easily manage your files; delete or create new folders.

Based on the list of features above, the official SkyDrive app for Android is very powerful. However, since Android is a Google-centric environment, many Android users may no tbe interested in the SkyDrive app over Google Drive. Microsoft may have a hard time tapping into the Google ecosystem, but at least the company is not focused only on creating applications for its own products.

The official SkyDrive App is not only available to Android and Windows Phone users; those using an iOS device can also get the SkyDrive app from the App Store.
