In an interview with Kotaku, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata spoke about Miiverse, the online hub for Nintendo's upcoming gaming console Wii U. Iwata consistently stressed that Wii U is not about removing antagonism between gamers; instead, it is about creating connections.
Nintendo will offer competitive multiplayer with Miiverse, though it wants to go beyond the functionality. Iwata wants an experience where players individually "will not feel like they are not [sic] playing by themselves".
"I feel that we need to create--or present--a gaming platform as the place to create that 'social graph' for folks who are in gaming circles," Iwata said. The president focused on social interaction between gamers in Miiverse, an aspect explored through StreetPass on the Nintendo 3DS. Players can share Miis automatically when a 3DS approaches.
"We have reached an era where even a single-player game experience can [have] a social component that is very important. And I think, again, that social component is mandatory," Iwata added. Fable 2 is single-player game with a "social component" as gamers can see orbs of players in real-time, or Need for Speed and its live feed or friends' scores.
Iwata talked about social interaction in the pre-internet age, talking with friends about a level completed in a Mario game or a boss battle in The Legend of Zelda. Iwata seems to miss that social interaction; in Miiverse players can share gaming experiences in a similar fashion to sharing tips via notes in Dark Souls, whether those tips are misleading or not.
Nintendo is not a company associated with providing robust online gaming systems. It did not with the Wii, aside from basic matchmaking functionality in games including Mario Kart Wii, though the company does seem to be focusing on providing basic functionality similar to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. However, judging by Iwata's comments, Nintendo seems to want to go beyond and provide always-on interactions similar to social networks like Facebook.
