M. Night Shyamalan's latest film "Split," starring James McAvoy ("Atonement," "X-Men: First Class") has received mostly positive reviews from moviegoers and critics alike. Now, the director of the hit psychological horror film has teased fans with details about the "Split" sequel characters and story.
Before reading the rest of this article, do take note that it will contain spoilers for "Split" and the planned sequel. The film, which director M. Night Shyamalan shot in his hometown of Philadelphia, is about Kevin Wendell Crumb (portrayed by McAvoy), a man who has "severe dissociative identity disorder." The film follows Kevin, who kidnaps three girls who must fight to escape and stay alive, per Movie Web.
Near the end of the film "Split," David Dunn (played by Bruce Willis), the protagonist of Shyamalan's other movie "Unbreakable," is shown at a diner where the other patrons are talking about a news report featuring Kevin. The press has dubbed Kevin "The Horde," and a woman at the diner says that he reminds her of a terrorist "who uses a wheelchair and was arrested 15 years prior." David tells her that she probably means Mr. Glass, another character from "Unbreakable" portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson.
At a Happy Sad Confused podcast, Shyamalan shared that he initially envisioned a different ending for "Split," but he changed it because "it just didn't work." The director shared, "There was another version of the credit sequence which was a comic book, which was graphic images of The Beast and then David Dunn and then Elijah and then them all mixing together. When I saw it done I was like, 'This is a f---ing home run,' and then when I put it on the movie it didn't work. It's one thing to say, 'You saw an origin story,' but to go into other characters... David Dunn is reacting to the news of The Horde. End of story. If you keep going it starts to undermine the movie you just saw."
According to Screen Rant, Shyamalan has also revealed that Kevin used to be part of the "Unbreakable" script during an interview with EW. The director told EW that Kevin was supposed to be the man David bumps into instead of "the Orange Suit Man. David would have had to fight one of Kevin's personalities to save the girls he was keeping hostage. If that panned out, moviegoers would have been "watching the girls side of it the whole time."
Shyamalan mused that the plot twist in the "Split" epilogue has smoothly paved the way for a potential sequel, and he also teased that he is now hard at work on "Split 2" or the "third 'Unbreakable' film." The director said that he already has a "robust outline" for the sequel, and Jackson, Willis, and McAvoy are all eager to star in the planned sequel.
