With the rumored iPhone 5 Sept. 12 debut deadline approaching, Apple's suppliers have pulled up their socks and are readying for the impending launch. Recent reports suggest that LG Display, who is one of the three suppliers for Apple's iPhone 5 in-cell technology panels, has begun mass production of the displays.
On Aug. 22, Reuters reported that "Flat-screen maker LG Display has started mass production of a new and thinner display, widely speculated to be for use in Apple Inc's next iPhone, and the display's production schedule remains in line with customers' product release plans, LG's chief executive said."
LG Display's chief executive Han Sang-beom confirmed to reporters that mass production of "in-cell" displays has begun at its units. "We just began mass production, and we don't expect any disruption in supplies," said Han Sang-beom.
However, the production process was not a cakewalk for the South Korean company.
"We had some hard times (in developing the new in-cell technology) at first...but it seems those hard times have finally ended," Han Sang-beom told reporters."There were a lot of trials and errors as we tried a technology that hadn't been used...[but] we're all cleared now."
Previously, the Wall Street Journal had reported that LG Display Inc. along with Sharp Corp. and Japan Display would be the three suppliers for Apple's next-gen iPhone's displays. In the past, LG Display has manufactured panels for the Cupertino-based company.
Additionally, in July, reports of Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn hiring people had fueled speculations that the recruitment was to aid iPhone 5 and iPad Mini productions. What's more, earlier this month, Sharp Corp. President Takashi Okuda had let slip that the Japanese company would start shipping screens in August.
The sudden increase in production at LG Display gives credence to the Sept.12 iPhone 5 debut conjectures. With Hand Sang-bom assuring that LG Display "will be able to supply the panels without any fail", it would seem that the iPhone 5 is gearing up for a September onslaught.
