Google recently geared up for the launch of the latest version of the Google Chrome browser. The latest version update was said to bring in a lot of performance enhancements such as faster page loading times, red warnings for unsecured shopping websites and most importantly the new tab-throttling feature.

Google Brings "Break The Web" Feature For Chrome 56

However, Google has reportedly removed the new tab-throttling feature, as it would have done more harm to the users than any good. According to the recent reports, the tab-throttling feature was introduced so that it could "break the web" as Google described it, as reported by Independent.

Background Tabs Exceeding Activity Limit Will Be Throttled

Samuel Reed explained further about this feature on the STRML blog. He explained that Google planned to give a "budget" to the background tabs so that they can limit the resources. If the tabs exceeded the limit, the browser would throttle them to limit the activity. Reed further explained that the feature would boost battery life.

Chrome Throttle Will Cripple Web Apps Like Slack And Discord

Though it is a good thing for browser vendors in terms of saving battery life, one must also consider the fact that a browser is no longer a reading device alone. Browsers host a range of web applications, and throttling would harm them. The tab-throttling feature would cripple web applications like Slack and Discord, as these apps require a lot of background work, as reported by ITPro.

Google Will Bring Throttles in M57

Reed also expressed that there will be no point in users to grant permission for notification if the app cannot send the notification at all due to throttling. Following this Google withdrew the throttle feature in the Chrome 56 update. However, the company has not given up on the idea. Google is planning to bring in an improvised version of the feature in its M57 version.
