The NES Classic Edition only has 30 built-in games but earlier this month, the console was hacked giving it an ability to house more games beyond its 30 title offerings. The console can re-create genuine 8-bit experiences and a stock model boots to the home screen but after entering a game, the only option to switch to another one is by pressing the reset button and unfortunately, start all over again.
Now, there's another new mod update that fixes this issue of the NES Classic Edition where users are able to go back to the home screen through a customizable gamepad shortcut by pressing Down and Select buttons simultaneously, according to Polygon. Since it is customizable, users are able to change the shortcut to whatever prefers them.
A GitHub user ClusterM uploaded a new version of an app called Hakchi2, which simplifies the backup process of the NES Classic Edition's internal storage and replaces it with a mod version. The process doesn't require users to open the hardware but they only have to connect to a PC through the included USB cable. Watch the full video tutorial below.
There are several methods for hacking the console but Hakchi2 seems to be the only one that can increase the game library's size plus the home screen addition, according to a report. The NES Classic Edition's USB connection has raised the question if Nintendo meant to leave this access in for future fixes or enhancements but then, it would be great if Nintendo provides a patch enabling the shortcut.
If Nintendo won't, then maybe someone else can fork the Hakchi2 project to just concentrate on adding in the controller shortcut and then get rid of the ROM dumping. It is worthy to note that modding the console will void its warranty. As for the NES Classic Edition stocks, it still very hard to find in stores these days.
