The Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops, a wave-based survival mode, is so popular that it could probably sustain itself as a separate game. Treyarch, the developer, has since released an article confirming the release of Zombies for Android.

A "Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies Android Field Manual" surfaced, courtesy XperiaGamer, providing details on the app. The app will have local multiplayer via bluetooth, or online multiplayer (no word on 3G/4G support). Moreover, the app contains fifty levels with hidden unlockable levels (there's no word yet on how to unlock the levels), including Kind der Toten from the console title.

No confirmation of gamepad support is available; so, the control method is the virtual analog stick and buttons. As a game becomes quicker/precise, a gamepad is optimal. Virtual inputs lack tactile feedback.

Treyarch seemingly removed the post, effectively confirming the news. The post is scheduled "to be published on July 25, 2012, at 6:47 AM." It's August 2, 2012 and the post hasn't resurfaced.

Strangely, the Android Field Manual for Zombies also got published and removed again. The Field Manual will mark the release of the title, because it states the game is out on Android.

Zombies is basically Treyarch's alternative to Spec Ops in the Modern Warfare series, a mission-based challenge mode. The latter is arguably the better of the modes, and genuinely good outside of the insanely popular - but average - multiplayer in later Modern Warfare titles.

iOS users have access to Zombies and it's a basically a low resolution version of the Zombie mode from Black Ops. It's the kind of game Android needs: often iOS get the big-name developers first and the higher quality titles.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 releases November 16, with Zombies taking the series to the future - 2025. The campaign is introducing choice and a mini-RTS section, influencing the game's conclusion. Treyarch is at least pushing the series forward, unlike Activison with Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is available on iOS for $4.99. Stay tuned for when, or if, Zombies arrives on Google Play and Android.
