Telltale Games' The Walking Dead adventure-horror title has been wildly successful, both critically and commercially, following the popularity of the comic book and TV show. It's scary, fun, and surprisingly human in its story; what's more, iOS users will have the chance to play the first episode from July 26.
Telltale Games confirmed that iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad will be getting the app. The studio announced the news via a blog post on its official website.
Only episode 1 - "A New Day" - is launching July 26 on iOS, but since the game is a five-part mini-series, future episodes will arrive. Episode 2 - "Starved for Help" - is available for Xbox 360, PlayStation, and PC, with Episode 3 launching in August.
"We've spent a great deal of time carefully integrating with our new interface design to create an even more intuitive experience with the touch screen," Telltale Games said in the blog post. In the aforementioned versions, dialogue choices are presented in a grid layout rather than as a list. To illustrate, players swipe across the screen to push a zombie away.
What's exciting about an episodic series like The Walking Dead is choices carry over, even if there are "save file" bugs with versions of the game. Choices made in episode 1 will matter in episode 2 and onwards; episode 2 recaps the previous events and choices matter early on in the second instalment.
The Walking Dead is a universal app, meaning that it works on iPhones and iPads without separate purchases. It also works on the iPad 2, the new iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, as well as fourth generation iPods. A specific date for Starved for Help's iOS release will be announced later.
A New Day is available for download from July 26 and will cost you $4.99. Episodes can be purchased individually at the same price or $14.99 can be paid for the entire series.
Playing just the first episode won't be satisfying in itself. Episode 2 definitely increases the horror and explores how a zombie outbreak is only a catalyst for humanity's despair. The game will surely leave you yearning for more.
